Requesting Accommodation Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

The ADA is a federal civil rights law that was passed in 1990 and is designed to protect people with disabilities from discrimination in employment, among other protections. Title I of the ADA prohibits discrimination in employment and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities.

The Employees’ Practical Guide to Requesting and Negotiating Reasonable Accommodations provides a good overview of the ADA and the interactive process for requesting reasonable accommodation and is appropriate for both employees and supervisors who wish to learn more.

In general, employees should request reasonable accommodation when they know that there is a workplace barrier that is preventing them, due to a disability, from competing for a job, performing a job, or gaining access to a benefit of employment like an employee lunchroom or employee parking.

SPC Employees can submit requests for reasonable accommodation by using this secure form: https://spc.guardianconduct.com/incident-reporting/new?incident_type=HR

Select Report Type HR Accommodations Request and then fill out all of the fields.

Please consult with the Job Accommodation Network A to Z list for recommended ideas for reasonable accommodations.

Upon receiving notice of a request, someone from the HR team will follow up to begin the interactive process.

Employees and/or supervisors may also reach out to the HR Benefits team to discuss the process or ask questions before deciding whether to request accommodation.
